O-ring Watch Gasket 0.70 mm — NBR / FKM Compatible

This round-section O-ring watch gasket measures 0.70 mm in cord thickness. It is intended as a replacement case-back gasket, crown gasket or crystal gasket for a wide range of mechanical and quartz watches manufactured between 1960 and today. The seal is moulded from a high-grade NBR nitrile rubber compound (Shore A 70 ± 5) following the dimensional standards published by ISOSWISS, which makes it directly interchangeable with most original Swiss, German and Japanese references. The same profile is also produced in FKM (commonly known under the trade name Viton) and in EPDM on request for divers’ watches or for movements that may be in contact with aggressive cleaning solvents.

Overview

A watch is only water-resistant for as long as its gaskets are healthy. Heat, ultraviolet light, perspiration, chlorinated pool water and ageing all turn rubber harder and smaller, until the joint no longer fills the groove of the case-back or crown. Once the bead loses its elasticity, water vapour creeps inside the case, condensation forms under the crystal and the movement starts to corrode. Replacing the gasket every two to three years — or every time the case-back is opened for a battery change, an overhaul or a strap fitting — is the single most effective preventive step a watchmaker or a careful owner can take. This 0.70 mm O-ring belongs to the most frequently ordered thicknesses in our workshop, because it covers a very large share of European and Asian case-back profiles. Each ring is checked individually for diameter, ovality and surface finish before packing.

Technical specifications

  • Cord thickness: 0.70 mm (tolerance ±0.02 mm)
  • Section: round, true O-ring geometry
  • Standard material: NBR nitrile rubber, hardness Shore A 70
  • Optional materials: FKM / Viton (high temperature, solvent resistant), EPDM (ozone, hot water)
  • Dimensional reference: ISOSWISS catalogue
  • Service temperature: −20 °C to +110 °C (NBR), up to +200 °C for FKM
  • Suitable for water-resistance ratings up to 10 ATM when fitted correctly and lubricated
  • Recommended lubricant: Moebius 8217 silicone grease for watch gaskets

When should this gasket be replaced?

We strongly recommend installing a new O-ring of 0.70 mm thickness in the following situations: after every battery change, after every movement overhaul, whenever the case-back has been unscrewed for any reason, whenever the watch has shown condensation under the crystal, whenever the existing gasket is flattened, cracked, twisted or shows a shiny polished band where it has been compressed for years, and as a routine measure every two to three years on a watch that is exposed to water. Even a watch that is never immersed loses moisture resistance over time, because rubber breathes and slowly leaches its plasticizers. A fresh gasket is also indispensable before any pressure test on a vacuum or wet tester.

How to fit the gasket

Begin by removing the old joint with a soft wooden or brass peg — never a sharp blade, which could score the seating groove. Clean the groove of the case-back with a lint-free cloth lightly moistened with isopropyl alcohol and inspect it under a loupe for nicks, burrs or pitting. Apply a very thin film of Moebius 8217 around the new O-ring, taking care not to overload the rubber, since excess grease attracts dust and accelerates ageing. Seat the gasket into the groove without stretching it; a stretched ring will shrink back over the following days and will then sit loose. Close the case-back with the appropriate die and torque, then pressure-test the watch to confirm its rating. The same procedure applies to the crown gasket and the crystal gasket, where the geometry permits.

Quality control

Each batch of 0.70 mm O-rings is inspected on arrival in our Swiss workshop. We measure cord diameter with a calibrated micrometer, check Shore hardness on a digital durometer and examine the surface under 10× magnification for moulding flash, inclusions or porosity. Rings that do not meet the ISOSWISS dimensional band are rejected. The compound contains no recycled rubber and no halogenated plasticizers, which guarantees long-term stability inside a sealed watch case.

Frequently asked questions

Q1. How long will this gasket last once fitted?
Under normal wear the NBR compound retains its elasticity for two to four years. Watches that are regularly exposed to chlorinated water, perfume, sun cream or solvents should be re-sealed every twelve to eighteen months. An FKM / Viton version can extend the service interval significantly.

Q2. Can I use this O-ring on a diver’s watch rated 20 ATM or more?
The geometry is suitable, but for a deep-rated diver we recommend the FKM variant of the same 0.70 mm profile, because it tolerates the higher mechanical and thermal loads encountered during decompression and helium escape cycles.

Q3. Do I really need Moebius 8217 or can I use any silicone grease?
A watch gasket lubricant must be chemically neutral toward NBR and FKM, free of mineral oils and stable across the operating temperature range. Moebius 8217 is the reference product in the trade; using a generic plumbing or automotive silicone may swell the rubber and shorten the seal’s life dramatically.
